Friar's Crag | Keswick | Lake District

What is Friar's Crag?

Legend has it that Friar's Crag was so named by the monks who used to start there the journeys to the friary on St. Herbert's Island.

Why Visit Friar's Crag?

I can think of at least three reasons why visiting Friar's Crag on a short break to the Lake District is time well spent.

Spectacular Adventure

Friar's Crag offers spectacular views of Derwentwater and the mountains. And the stroll to Friar's Crag is an adventure in itself with lovely views of forest paths and lakeland to enjoy on the way.

John Ruskin's Memorial

Friar's Crag is one of the places in the Lake District associated with the life of John Ruskin.

History has it that when John Ruskin was a small child his nurse took him to Friar's Crag for a walk. The little boy was impressed by its beauty and carried this early memory throughout his life. This memory is also said to have influenced John Ruskin's decision in his later life to settle in the Lake District.

Now at the Friar's Crage there is a memorial to John Ruskin.

Star-Gazing

In summer Friar's Crag is a popular star-gazing spot. The bench on the end of the Friar's Crag is often praised for being clear of light and offering awe-inspiring views of the starry sky and star reflections in the waters of the lake beneath.

How to Get to Friar's Crag?

For a keen walker (who I am not) Friar's Crag can be reached by foot. It is located within a walking distance of 0.7 miles from the centre of Keswick.

The recommended starting points for the walk to Friar's Crag are the Keswick Moot Hall on the Market Street of Keswick or Keswick's Theatre by the Lake.

The walking route to Friar's Crag is mostly flat terrain of tarmac and gravel pathways. Reportedly, in places the route is uneven but the lake and mountain views on the way save the scene.

On my short break in the Lake District I had a day's guided tour and cruise of the lakes. Of the many things I enjoyed on the tour was the view of Friar's Crag from a jettie's vantage point as we cruised on Derwentwater.

Friar's Crag is a spectacular small rock that juts into Derwentwater and offers stunning views of the fells on the opposite shore of this lake.
